Single Ply Roofing

Single ply roofing can be categorized into two main groups – thermosets and thermoplastics.

Thermosets

Thermosets membranes require adhesive such as tape or contact cement. These membranes are made of rubber polymers. The most commonly used polymer is EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer). These membranes have a long-term ability to resist harsh weather conditions. They are also very effective at of bearing environmental stressors like ultraviolet rays, fluctuating temperatures, and ozone.

Thermoset membranes are effective energy savers. They are also very receptive to cool roof coatings. When a silicone or acrylic coating is applied to a thermoset membrane, the roof’s resistance to UV rays can improve dramatically.

Thermoplastics

According to the Single Ply Roofing Institute, “Most thermoplastic membranes are made to include the strengthening layer, usually made up of polyester or maybe fiberglass. This provides improved strength and stability. As thermoplastic single ply roofs are characteristically light in color, they may provide brilliant reflectivity, helping in potential energy savings.”

Thermoplastic roofs are welded together via hot air welding. When thermoplastic membranes cool down, they may return to their original form. PVC and TPO are two of the most commonly used thermoplastic single ply membranes.
