Full-Service Single-Ply Roofing Options

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

In PVC single-ply, two plies of PVC material sandwich a layer of reinforcing polyester in the middle. PVC membranes are heat-welded at the seams, creating a seamless, monolithic roof that is watertight and extremely durable. PVC is resistant to most chemicals and fairly low maintenance

TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin)

TPO is a rubber-based, flexible, fabric-like single-ply membrane. TPO is a popular roofing product for two main reasons: (1) It’s relatively cheap, and (2) It’s white.

TPO membrane can be mechanically attached or fully-adhered (see below for more on methods of adherence). It also has very good resistance to fats, oils, and microbial growth.

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)

EPDM is a fancy name for the traditional, flexible rubber roof membrane. Rubber roofs have a long track record of proven performance. A properly installed rubber roof is more than capable of withstanding rain, snow, hail, sun, temperature fluctuations, and much more. And although rubber roofs are typically black, you can also have them topped with an elastic roof coating to increase reflectivity and keep your building cooler.

Installing & Adhering Your Single-Ply Membrane

There are four main methods to install single-ply roofing systems. (Not all methods can be used on all single-ply materials.):

  • Ballasting – Using heavy ballast, such as stone, to cover and weigh down the roofing membrane.
  • Mechanical Fastening – Using mounting plates, nails, and screws to adhere the membrane to the roof.
  • Adhesive – Using glue or another bonding agent to fully adhere the membrane to the roof.
  • Heat Welding – Using a special heat gun to weld membrane seams together and bond them to the roof.
